Vital Statistics & Registrar

For requests or information related to Marriage Licenses, Birth and Death Certificates, residents are advised to contact the Registrar in the appropriate town. In general, the following guidance points apply:

Marriage License applications can be obtained from the town where either applicant lives.  If marriage partners are both non-residents of NJ, the application must be obtained from the Registrar where the marriage is to be performed.  These guidelines also apply to Civil Unions.

It is generally recommended that the application process be started 2-3 weeks prior to the ceremony, in case of unforeseen circumstances.  Completed applications are valid for 6 months up to a year, upon request.  The marriage license will then be issued after a 72-hour waiting period following receival of the application and is valid for 30 days after it is issued.  Couples are strongly encouraged to contact their local Registrar for an appointment and for additional details.

Birth Certificates are obtained from the municipality where the person was born.  If the child was born in a hospital, the birth certificate would come from the town where the hospital is located.  If the birth occurred at home, it would come from the town where the mother resides.

Death Certificates are obtained from the municipality where the individual passed.  If the death occurred in a hospital, the death certificate would come from the town where the hospital is located.  If the death occurred at home, it would come from the town where the individual resided.
